2006-2007 Funded Projects

The following is a list of projects that have been funded for the 2006-2007 funding year.

"West Prince Arts Council Showcase"
There was a definite need for an exhibit of local artist products, therefore the West Prince Arts Council decided to invite local artists to exhibit their pieces of art at the "Artistic Showcase 2007". The Showcase was held on March 10, 2007 at Rodd Mill River Resort and co-ordinated by Almeda M. Thibodeau. The Master of Ceremonies was Perry Batten. Floral decoration was prepared by Village Florist O'Leary, and the sound system was provided by Roy Dyment. Opening remarks for the Showcase was done by Honorable Gail Shea, MLA in Tignish/DeBlois riding.

There were four major sponsors for the Showcase: Credit Unions in the area, O'Leary Co-op Limited, Prince County Penny Saver, and O'Leary Guardian Drug Store.

West Prince artists contribute to the cultural and economic well-being of the area. There were 26 most impressive professional displays from individuals and/or groups presenting their creative products. On display were CDs (fiddling, Gospel, country, and folk), books (children's stories, poetry, history, and music), jewellery, oil paintings, prints, note cards, pressed flower art, ceramic, woodworking, driftwood art, baskets (ash split, Mi'Kmaq style), pottery, photography, quilting, portraits in pencil, charcoal drawings and fine arts. Local artists continue to exhibit work in public spaces or in their own studio, providing much needed exposure.

Added to the Showcase was a performing area for musicians to perform. The musicians included representatives of the P.E.I. Guitar Festival, Helping Hands Band, Ceilidh Brae, Ivan Ashley, and many other local musicians who provided the audience with stepdancing, fiddling, singing, keyboarding, and guitar picking.

Dr. Ronald Matsusaki read some of his poetry at the Showcase. As well, Gerry O'Brien read a chapter from the children's story book that he has written.

The Showcase was a great success. Hopefully with the enthusiasm, commitment and support of the artists, the Showcase will continue and expand.

"Tignish Shore CIC Christmas Show"
The CIC in Tignish produced a Christmas show featuring artists and musicians from Tignish and the local area, to the enjoyment of their audiences. The West Prince Arts Council was proud to help sponsor this show.

"Website Development"
June Ellis, a local artist who paints beautiful pictures, designed a web site to better market her work. The West Prince Arts Council gave some assistance to June Ellis in this venture.

"P.E.I. Guitar Festival"
Grant assistance was provided for guitar workshops during the P.E.I. Guitar Festival, held in Tyne Valley in 2006. This festival was a huge success.

"Lazy Jacks Band Demo CD"
The West Prince Arts Council helped in sponsoring a Demo CD for the Lazy Jacks and wish them all the best with their music promotion.

Trailblazer
The Legendary "Big Jim" Pendergast

In this book, sponsored by the West Prince Arts Council in 2005, the author(s) sketched the life of Big Jim Pendergast as the legend grew- tracing his success in track and field and heavyweight boxing in the U.S. and Canada, his participation in the Klondike gold rush, and his promotional skills in developing harness racing, boxing, ice rinks, long distance swimming, and in preserving folklore. As well as humorous accounts of familial relationships, there are samples of his writings on the two themes that dominated his interest: one was that of encouraging and cajoling young people to fulfill their potential, and the other was the theme of economic revival for his beloved Island, especially through tourism. Reg Pendergast/Pat Stanyer ( Reg., former President of the West Prince Arts Council, is now deceased)
